Eraser Carved Rubberstamp - By Ruud Janssen

Discoverd an older rubber stamp I carved in the 90-ies. It is still in good condition. I print all the original rubberstamps that are in the TAM Rubberstamp Archive also to keep their cndition good. The oil in the ink makes the rubber live longer. If you don't do that, they will just fall to pieces (just like that!).
The Rubberstamp is of course only finished when you put your original fingerprints inside the open spot....

This Eraser Carved Rubberstamp is one of my Favorites. It is made by the late Lon Spiegelman (USA). He had a set of imaginary people he tranferred into rubber. Besides a lot of prints he also carved this one for me and donated it to the TAM Rubberstamp Archive. It still works very well when I print it every few years to keep it in good condition.

The parcel that J.F Chapelle (France) sent me was well packed. It is a whole performance to just open it. I needed some sissors too as you can see below.

The box was stamped with one of J.F.'s stamps. All I have to do now is open the boz and discover what is inside.

As you can see, a wonderful box with two original rubberstamps in it. Will be tempting to use them for the first time (or keep them like they arrived.

When sending mail to the old Fluxus members one can always expect surprises. Instead of printing on the stampsheets for Fluxus rubberstamps Ben Vautier sent back the sheet with this original rubberstamp out of his own collection. The text reads: "l 'instant présent m'interesse - Ben". Translation: "The situation now interests me - Ben". Off course I printed the stamp on the stampsheet for him and that will join the collection. The rubberstamp will be used for the outgoing mail on special occasions. Will think of a way to reply to this.

Besides the rubberstamp the envelope was also filled with old and very recent paperwork published for exhibitions Ben Vautier had in the last years of even one in this year.

The rubber stamp is the twentieth century's definitive emblem of bureaucracy, providing an official mark of acceptance or rejection of governments and corporations. Military, housing, and job applications have been sealed with a stamp, as have births, marriages, and deaths. “Greetings from Daddaland,” curated by John Held Jr. - who ran the Stamp Art Gallery in San Francisco in the mid-1990s - provides an alternate history of that tool, charting its renegade use by countless artists and pranksters over the past century.

Dadaists Kurt Schwitters and Marcel Duchamp were early adopters, with the latter represented here with reproductions of chess-themed stamps that he made around 1919 and used during his stay in Buenos Aires. After the wars, Nouveau Réalist Arman popularized the stamp, and Held includes a long, thin stamp of a paintbrush that the artist made in the mid-1950s - a perfect complement for his art, which was created through the obsessive accumulation of the same objects. Next, Fluxus members and other radicals (like Ray Johnson and Robert Watts) picked up the stamp in the 1960s, and their experiments are catalogued in voluminous detail.

The walls of one room are lined with dozens of selections from the Traveling Art Mail (TAM) Rubber Stamp Archive, strips of paper mailed by the Dutch stamp-art collector Ruud Jansssen to other artists and enthusiasts over the years that read, “I kindly ask you to print a few of your (funniest…) stamps on this paper.” The responses he received range from opaque, banal messages - “NO SPITTING,” “BE BLANK,” one card reads - to ornate prints of wristwatches and detailed portraits and still lifes that have the detail of fine woodcuts, highlighting the medium's remarkable range.

The prints in the TAM Archive also encapsulate the strange characteristics of the stamp as an art medium: they are usually anonymous, and they are endlessly reproducible. (One wonders whether the art resides in these coveted rubber stamp or their free prints.) Authorship and uniqueness are tossed aside by the medium, which was designed to create fleeting pleasures, not everlasting masterpieces - exactly how these artists wanted it. Today, when bureaucratic processes have moved into an unseen digital world, it all looks almost quaint.

At the Stendhal Gallery in New York City 5 or these larege frames are hung to give the visitors an idea of the dimensions of the TAM Rubberstamp Archive. A selection of the last 30 years and also sheets from the San Francisco project and fluxus artists are included in the exhibition Dadaland, Fluxus, mail-art and rubber stamps, that is currently showing at the Gallery. I visited the opening on April 15th, gave a lecture on April 17th 2010.

The booklet shown in this video was a contribution for the TAM-Rubberstamp Archive back in 1984. Since Simon died only recently, I decided to document his work because his contributions to the Mail-Art network are not often discussed here in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands Simon is know for his Poetry, Performances, He was connected to the CoBrA group and the Provo's in the 60-ies.

A rubberstamp with history. Lon Spiegelman (USA) designed the logo for this stamp. He made a complete set of logo's for several mail-artists that were active in 1990. I transferred one logo he made into this rubberstamo which still is being used.

Lon Spiegelman (1941-2002) was an American mail artist and networker who initiated the concept called “Money & mail-art don't mix” stating that mail-art is non-commercial art and so can’t be bought or sold. He also coined the term “N-tity” with American mail artist Carlo Pittore, a term that refers to the spirit of networking and founded Spiegelmism Post. He was guest editor of Umbrella in the 1980s, a magazine originally started and edited by Judith A. Hoffberg.
